Where in the World is…

February 3, 2007

Ruslan Lutskiy? The Minsk native who grew up just a couple hundred miles from Chernobyl, who came to the US on refugee status in 1992 or so and whom I dated for five years? He’s the reason I learned Russian (and in fact majored in it for a long time in college) and I’m sure shaded my whole humanity in various ways. And I him, I’m sure.

I haven’t heard from him in a couple of years and would really love to know what happened to him. Alas, he has no Google presence and I don’t really know where he went.

Can you tell I’m sitting here being reflective? I have a party to go to now. Onward.

Oh, I thought you were leading up to giving an update, or saying you ran into him; sad. You know how I late to lose track of people, and I don’t know if any of my “lost ones” were as, shall we say, significant, as Ruslan was in your life. Are friendships real? Are they just circumstantial? Or both? How can people be so important at one time in your life, and then, because you leave college, or move, or get out of the Marines, for instance, that you just never see them again. What is that? Someone once said, “There are no permanent friends, or permanent enemies.” This goes against everything I’ve always tried to believe, but maybe it’s true. Cynical and depressing. Or maybe that’s just me.
