One of those Weird Internet Coincidences Worthy of Note

February 1, 2007

I just got a spam. OK, that’s nothing even sort of interesting.

This particular spam was one of those relatively legitimate looking ones that makes you kind of think: I wonder what these jerks’ angle is, anyway. It involved some sort of promotion entangling Peanut M&M’s with a free gas card giveaway. Right. There was a typical fake ‘unsubscribe’ link toward the bottom that was linked to, in short, the domain ‘defrun.com.’

For some reason I carried my very minor curiosity further and googled for “defrun.” The very first hit is listed as “logo steal macro lisp.” Clicking into it, I found that the first line is:

“Simple Logo interpreter stolen from Topher Cyll’s article”

I know Topher Cyll. Personally–he used to live ’round here (watch out, Boston!). He’s a perfectly nice guy who I wish I actually knew a bit better, who seems to have a lot to say about Ruby.

My question is: How random is that? Granted, I know that the world’s six-billion-plus population is not linearly revealed by googling. So Topher has a more than random likelihood of popping up in a Google search. Especially since he deals with Internetty things. But I’m still left with the feeling that this is peculiar.

If I were a betting man, or a religious one, or one to read anything into anything, I’d be keeping my eyes peeled in the next few days. And bravo, Topher. I salute you for various Googlicious reasons.

I was on some thing called “Zoom” last night, you probably know it, it supposedly lists people and what business they are associated with. Anyway, the only mention of me is as somebody on Lyza’s site. Hahaha, without Lyza I don’t exist, on the inter-pipes anyway. It’s a series of pipes.
