First Day out with Canon 5D MarkII

January 10, 2009

The weather in Portland today is dreadful. It’s frigid. It’s dim. It’s foggy. Not in any way photography weather.

But still. I had to try. I took a short walk today and took photographs, mostly of trees and walls. I’m not proud of my initial results but they did give me a chance to learn a few things about the camera.

Specifically for me, I learned:

  • The LCD makes things look overexposed by about a stop, but they are not. Trying to second-guess this ended with underexposed shots.
  • The saturation setting in the “Picture Style” area works. Of course you can do all of this post-process, too.
  • Color rendition is superb even in “Standard” picture style setting.

Here is a photo for you. Click for full resolution. Sorry about the slight camera shake. It’s dark out and my shutter speed was only 1/45.
