Because pseudoephedrine (also known as the only cold medication that actually does something) is the core ingredient for homebrew methamphetamine, and because Oregon is, like, the crystal meth capitol of the world, one now is required to have a prescription to obtain it. I was OK with it being behind the counter, OK even with registering my purchase of it, but no way am I going to go to the doctor for a cold.
I bought the “new formula” over-the-counter generic NyQuil caplets at Fred Meyer last night and took them before bed. Nothing. Nose still dripping and chugging–they didn’t even knock me out. I went to bed early, at about 9:30, but didn’t get to sleep until 1. Bleh.
I blame the meth heads that I didn’t get a proper night’s sleep. Bastards.
I’m going to sound like some kind of new-age hippy here (which believe me, I’m not), but I’ve found that the less you use medication, the less you need it.
I’ve not had any kind of medication (no painkillers, cold remedies or anything) for the last 5-10 years, and as a result, I now never get headaches, colds hardly affect me and even dodgy food doesn’t cause major discomfort.
It’s amazing what defences the human body has if we let it use them.
