Books: What's On Tap; The Popular Sentiment Makes Me Sigh

August 31, 2006

The contrast between the top books chosen by the educated and those selected by the unwashed masses depresses me:
Random House’s 100 Best Novels of the 20th Century.

As I mentioned, I finished up Quicksilver, and am now on to Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. On deck: Camus’ The Stranger.

Unwashed? Aren’t you high and mighty.

Frankly, I think the reader’s list is as phony as a 3 dollar bill.

You know I love goading anonymous posters who will never read my responses, but as someone said, “only lost causes are worth fighting for,” or something.

Anyhow, “unwashed masses” is a common expression, it’s kind of a joke, you cretin, something you hear enough times, if you read, that is, that it loses it’s punch and just becomes an idiom. Like, “white trash”; that used to be a huge insult, now people let it fly right past. Apparently you’ve never heard it before, congratulations.
Also, it’s customary to end a question with a question mark.
Finally, your half-formed statement: “I think the reader’s list…phony…” what are you even referring to? You don’t think she read those books? Or you don’t think she liked those books? Are you even talking about Lyza, or what?
To quote Bill Hicks–”What are you readin’…for?”
