Such Clarity of Sky; Such Calamity

After years of rain, it cleared and got shiny. I know yesterday I was baffled by the sight of it and walked around tilted back staring at the blue I’d nearly forgotten up there. I walked in the mid-afternoon near work for a moment or several. I work very near the Hillsboro airport, which is always abuzz with Cessnas and corporate commuter jets. The sky was buzzing hotter yesterday because it was so clear.
On my drive home it was clear again in sky and traffic until Murray Blvd, when suddenly everything came to a sweltering halt and all I got to look at for the next hour-and-a-half was heat waves from stationary cars. All lanes of Hwy 26 were blocked by an accident.
At the same time, the radio I was listening to as I propped my door open there on the stagnant freeway for want of air and tried to read a novel, the radio said that there had been a perplexing rash of late afternoon accidents (a fatal on Hwy 99E, two on I-205), the likes of which were more suited to a February downrush of rain and dim than a shockingly-perfct May day.
At the same time in Hillsboro, by work, a plane was crashing, killing all four on board. Those commuting saw it and screamed.
This morning the chaos happened again. Clearest day of the year: worst traffic. Accidents clogged I-205, Hwy 217, I-84. Just now I see that a drunk driver, barrelling along in the wrong direction, caused a nine-car pileup on I-5 in the Terwilliger curves that has the entire freeway shut down. It took me an hour to get to work today.
It kind of makes a fellow feel cautious and misled by the temperate halycon day, again. Will I make it home alive?

We’ve got some jackass with a knife perched atop a construction crane some 18 stories high above a busy commercial/entertainment district for ~24 hours now.
They’re firing sirens at him constantly to keep him awake and aloft. A couple of blocks of maybe the busiest street in town has been blocked the whole time.
He dropped his wallet sometime last night.
I say they bust out the TASERs. Or perhaps a trained monkey of some sort. A trained monkey with a TASER. Yes.
ah, things like this really make me happy to not have to drive on 26 to/from work for a while :)
but i wish i was in Portland to enjoy the weather. i know there will be many hot and humid days in the big city.
