This Week's Web Idea: Ultimate Reading List Site

November 27, 2007

After a few years of scouring the internets for the ultimate, lifelong reading list toward which I could strive, I have failed. Every book list is missing something: the 1001 Books to Read Before you Die is only novels, other lists are weighted toward philosophy, Greek classics, science fiction novels. And what about those award winners: Pulitzer, Nobel, National Book Award? I would love to make a site that would allow you to cobble together a master reading list from myriad sources, to personalize it to the extreme. Then hook it in to APIs at LibraryThing, Amazon, other places so that you don’t end up with anyone having to duplicate information. You can show people their progress on their own personal list via nice charts and graphs, pretty things that motivate. You can compare people’s lists with other users’ lists, socially link folks based on their reading goals. Anyway, a dream of mine.

I really like the list created by Will Durant in this properly titled book:

Please visit the St. John’s College website and check out their reading list. Eclectic and essential.
