Books: "Mayflower" by Nathaniel Philbrick

May 24, 2007

OK, what happened to this book?

It started out exactly what I want, and what I want is, as a complete Plymouth Colony newb, an explanation of the whole general hoo-hah that was the Mayflower voyage and subsequent colonization within a modern historical context. And from an author I’m fond of to boot.

And it did that, for about a hundred pages. The rest of the book, however, was about the lead up to and the execution of King Philip’s War in 1675-76. I love history, but I hate military history, so by the end of the book I was fairly glazed over.

However, I can’t call it boring, exactly. I learned a goodly amount and I feel better for having read it.

Rating: **** (out of 5)
Should really be ***1/2 but I really like Mr. Philbrick
