The 5 Things Meme: Part IV

January 8, 2007

4. I was an ugly child. Really, really ugly. From the time I was 8 until I was 14 or so. The worst ages to be ugly. So I have grown up with the understanding that I am not fun to look at. Bad skin, braces, horrible glasses, unbelievable hair (permed bangs, anyone?), teeth that could be kindly described as “buck,” then later, as “braceface.”

A lot of my loved ones now brush that off. Naw, they insist, everyone went through an awkward phase.

Not like this they didn’t. The first guy I ever worked up the balls to ask out said: “Lyza?! She’s uglier than shit. Are you kidding?!”

(I can’t figure out how to type a long exasperated sigh)If I can be allowed to rebut, Lyza was never ugly, she was, at worst, plain and awkward. I, myself, was an attractive child up until puberty, when it all went so very wrong. So I know from bad, awkward phases, some of us never really outgrow them, just when you learn to like how you look- something changes, you get fat, or lose your hair, for instance. Just be glad you ever got to experience being one of the beautiful people, as trite as that sounds. No, not everyone did have an “ugly” phase, no matter what they might think, but very few people, indeed, swing so far in the other direction, either.

Thanks Lyza for sharing all this. Try to keep in mind that you’ve been dealt a very good hand in life. Hang in there. With time the pain will fade and life will become easier.

No no, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to come across like I was bewailing my situation. I am very, very fortunate! I am OK! It was just a weird time in my life.
